How to delete your Camp Out account
You can delete your Camp Out account yourself, at any time, from inside the app: open Camp Out, tap the settings icon to open The Garage, then under Account tap Manage account and choose Delete my account.
If you no longer have the app installed, you can request deletion from our account deletion page instead. What deletion removes and what stays is set out in section 5 below.
Camp Out ("the app") is operated by Go Camping LLC, a Colorado limited liability company ("we," "us," "our"). This policy explains what information the app and our website (campoutatlas.com) collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. If you have a question, contact us at privacy@campoutatlas.com. Camp Out is intended for use in the United States, and this policy is written for people in the United States.
The short version
- You can browse the campground map without an account.
- The app uses your location only while it's open, to center the map and find campgrounds near you. We don't track you in the background and we don't keep a history of where you've been.
- If you create an account, we store your email address and any optional RV details you choose to add.
- Campground verifications and notes you post are public, but they're shown without your name or identity.
- We don't sell your information and we don't show ads. The app contains no third-party analytics, advertising, or cross-app tracking tools. (Google's map software, which draws the map, does collect some technical data, and our website uses Google Analytics. See section 3.)
- You can delete your account at any time in the app. Your account and profile are removed. The notes and campground information you contributed stay in Camp Out, permanently detached from you — we remove the link between you and them, and we won't try to re-identify you.
1. Information we collect
If you use the app without an account
- Your device's location (only if you allow it). The app asks for permission to use your location while the app is open. It uses it to center the map on you and to find campgrounds in the area you're viewing. The app never accesses your location in the background.
- The map area you're viewing. To show campgrounds, the app sends the boundaries of the map area on your screen to our servers. We use it only to answer that request. We don't store it with anything that identifies you.
- Technical information. Like almost every online service, our hosting provider automatically records basic technical details when your device connects: IP address, device and operating-system type, and the time of the request. These logs are used for security and to keep the service running. They're kept for up to 30 days and aren't used to build a profile of you.
If you create an account
- Account information: your email address and your password (stored only in scrambled, 'hashed' form — we can't see it). Camp Out uses email and password only — there is no Sign in with Apple, Google, Facebook or any other third-party sign-in, so no other company is told that you have an account here.
- RV details (optional): details about your rig that you choose to enter, used to filter the map for campgrounds whose published maximum length fits it. Camp Out never tells you whether a site will fit — it only compares your figures against what a campground has published, and campgrounds that have published nothing are simply not shown by that filter. If you are signed in, your RV details are saved to your account, so they follow you to a new phone — and your account is the only place they are kept. If you are NOT signed in you can still type them in and the filter still works, but nothing is stored: the fields are empty again next time you open the app. We also look at RV details in aggregate — for example, the mix of rig sizes across all users — to understand who uses Camp Out and what to build next. That analysis never identifies you and is never shared with anyone else. You can clear them at any time by emptying the fields.
- Saved campgrounds: the campgrounds you save with the heart. These are stored with your account on our servers, so your list follows you to a new phone; your phone also keeps a copy so the list opens without a signal. Saved campgrounds are private to you — nobody else can see what you have saved.
- Your confirmation that you're 18 or older, and when you gave it.
Content you choose to share
- Verifications and notes. When you confirm a campground's details or leave a note about it, we store it with your account so you can edit or delete it and so we can enforce posting limits. Publicly, others see only the note, the month and year it was posted, and a count of recent verifications. Your name, email, and account are never shown with it. If you later delete your account, the note stays but the link to you is permanently removed (see section 5).
- Campground corrections and additions. Details you fix or campgrounds you add become part of the Camp Out database. This is factual information about places, not about you.
- Photos [NOT YET BUILT]. If we add photo uploads, photos you upload are public and shown without your identity. We remove the location and camera information stored inside a photo file before publishing it, so a photo doesn't reveal where you were or which device you used.
- Reports. If you report a note, we record that you reported it, so each person can report a note only once and we can review it. If you delete your account, your reports are removed.
- Blocks. If you block someone, we store that so we can hide each of you from the other. Blocking is never shown to the person blocked. Your blocks are deleted with your account.
- Messages to us. If you email us, we keep the message and your email address so we can respond. We also keep anything you include in your message.
Marketing email
If you sign up for our newsletter or product updates, you opt in separately — never as part of creating an account — and we record that you agreed and when. Every marketing email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing doesn't affect service emails like password resets. Our marketing email is sent through Kit (kit.com), which receives your email address and the fact that you subscribed, and handles unsubscribes. Kit's own privacy policy applies to the information it holds.
What we don't collect
We don't collect your contacts, photos (unless you upload one), microphone, or background location. We don't use advertising identifiers, and the app itself contains no third-party analytics, advertising, or crash-reporting tools of our own. There are two exceptions, both described in section 3: Google's map software inside the app collects limited technical data, and our website uses Google Analytics.
Cookies and website analytics. Our website, campoutatlas.com, uses cookies that are strictly necessary for it to work, and Google Analytics, which sets its own cookies. Google Analytics tells us how many people visit the site and which pages they look at; it collects your IP address, device and browser details, approximate location derived from your IP address, and the pages you view, and Google's own Privacy Policy (policies.google.com/privacy) applies to it. We don't use advertising cookies, we don't use the website to build a profile of you, and we don't link website analytics to your Camp Out account. You can opt out with Google's browser add-on (tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout) or by blocking cookies in your browser; the site works either way. ⚠️ THE APP CONTAINS NO ANALYTICS — this applies to the website only.
2. How we use information
We use information only to:
- run the app: show the map, find campgrounds, and keep your account and saved places;
- display public verifications, notes and campground information (without your identity);
- review reported content and enforce our community rules;
- understand, in aggregate, who uses Camp Out and how to improve it;
- protect the service and its users from abuse, fraud, and security threats;
- send you marketing email if you've opted in;
- respond to your messages; and
- comply with the law.
We don't sell your information, use it for advertising, or share it with data brokers.
3. Who we share information with
We share information only with service providers who help us run the app, and only as needed for them to do that:
- Supabase hosts our database and handles sign-in (servers in the United States).
- Netlify hosts our website, campoutatlas.com. It automatically records basic technical details when your browser connects, such as your IP address and the pages requested, and it receives anything you submit through a form on the site — for example an account-deletion request.
- Google Analytics measures website traffic for us, as described under Cookies in section 2. It applies to the website only, not the app.
- Resend sends our email, such as account confirmations and password resets. It receives your email address and the contents of those messages.
- Google Maps displays the map inside the app. When the map loads, Google's map software in the app collects information such as your device's IP address, device and operating-system details, the map area being viewed and how you move and zoom the map, crash and performance data from the map software, and a pseudonymous identifier for the map software, and uses it under Google's own Privacy Policy (policies.google.com/privacy).
- Apple Maps or Google Maps get the destination when you tap to navigate. That hands you off to their app, where their own privacy policies apply.
- Apple (App Store) and Google (Google Play) receive information about your download, and about any future purchases, under their own privacy policies.
We may also disclose information with your consent or at your direction, if required by law or a valid legal request, to protect the safety of users or the public, or as part of a merger, sale, or transfer of our business. In that last case, this policy would continue to apply to your information.
4. What's public
The campground information in the app comes from public government and open data sources and is visible to everyone. Verifications, notes, campground corrections, and photos you post are public without your identity attached. Please don't include personal information (yours or anyone else's) in a note or a photo.
5. Keeping and deleting your information
- Delete your account in the app. Deleting your account permanently removes your account and sign-in, your profile (including your RV details), your saved campgrounds, your blocks, your reports, and your posting history.
- What stays: the notes, verifications, campground corrections and photos you contributed remain in Camp Out, with the link to you permanently removed. Once that happens, we no longer keep any record linking them to you (other than in backups, below), and we won't try to re-identify you, and they can no longer be edited or deleted from your account. We keep them because other campers rely on them and because removing them would leave gaps in campground information for everyone. If you want a specific note removed before you delete your account, delete it in the app first. If you've already deleted your account and want a note taken down, email privacy@campoutatlas.com and describe it; we'll do our best to find it, though it may no longer be identifiable as yours.
- Delete individual notes at any time while your account exists.
- Saved places on your device are removed when you delete them in the app or uninstall it.
- Backups: copies of deleted information may remain in secure backups for up to 90 days before they're overwritten. Until they're overwritten, backups may still contain the link between you and your contributions. Backups aren't used for any other purpose.
- Banned accounts: if we ban an account for abuse, we keep a one-way fingerprint (a hash) of its email address — not the address itself, and nothing else — so the same address can't be used to create a new account. It is used only to enforce the ban, never for marketing or any other purpose, and it is deleted after 3 years. Everything else about the account is removed as described above.
- Moderation and security records (for example, a record that a note was removed for breaking the rules) may be kept longer where needed to prevent abuse or meet legal obligations.
- Other records: technical logs are kept for up to 30 days; messages you send us are kept as long as needed to respond and for up to 2 years afterwards; and, if you opt in to marketing email, a record of your consent is kept while you're subscribed and for 3 years afterwards.
6. Your choices and rights
- Location: you can turn location access off at any time in your device settings. The map still works, and you can move it by hand.
- Marketing email: unsubscribe from any marketing email, or email us to opt out.
- Access, correction, and deletion: you can view and edit your profile in the app and delete your account there. For anything else, including a copy of your information, email privacy@campoutatlas.com. We'll respond within 45 days. If we need more time, we'll tell you why, and we may take up to 45 more days where the law allows. We may need to confirm your identity first, usually by contacting you at your account email.
- State privacy rights: depending on where you live (for example, California, Colorado, Virginia, and other states), you may have rights to know, access, correct, delete, or obtain a copy of your personal information, and to opt out of its sale or use for targeted advertising. We don't sell personal information or use it for targeted advertising. To exercise any right, email us. You can also have an authorized agent make a request for you. We won't treat you differently for doing so. If we decline your request, you can appeal by replying to our decision or emailing privacy@campoutatlas.com with "Appeal" in the subject line. We'll respond within the time the law requires, and if you're still not satisfied you can contact your state attorney general. Once content is detached from your account, we can't link it to you, so we generally can't retrieve or delete it as yours.
- Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control: because we don't track you across other sites and apps, or sell or share personal information for targeted advertising, we don't change how Camp Out works in response to Do Not Track signals. Where the law requires, we treat a Global Privacy Control signal as a request to opt out of any sale or sharing.
- Precise location: we treat your device's precise location as sensitive. We use it only while the app is open, only to show the map and campgrounds near you, and only with your device permission.
7. Children
Camp Out is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from them. You must be 18 or older to create an account. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it. People under 18 may browse the map without an account. We use their information only to show the map, as described above, and we never use anyone's information for targeted advertising or profiling. If we learn that someone under 18 has created an account, we'll delete it.
8. Security
We use industry-standard safeguards, including encrypted connections, access controls that limit each account to its own data, and restricted administrative access. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will notify you if required by law after a breach.
9. Where information is processed
Camp Out is operated from the United States, and your information is stored and processed in the United States.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the "Last updated" date above, and the current version is always available at campoutatlas.com/privacy. For significant changes — such as introducing paid features, photo uploads, marketing email, a new service provider, or crash reporting — we'll make the change clear rather than quiet, and we'll ask you to accept the new policy in the app where that is appropriate. If a change would let us use information we've already collected in a materially different way, we'll ask for your consent first. Otherwise, continuing to use Camp Out after a change takes effect means you accept it.
